What is a RAG chatbot — and does your business need one?
How AI chatbots trained on your own content work, what they cost to run, and when a simple FAQ page is still the better choice.
A normal AI chatbot answers from what it learned during training. That makes it great at general chat, but it doesn't know your prices, your delivery policy or your opening hours.
So what does RAG mean?
RAG stands for retrieval-augmented generation. Before the AI answers, it searches your own content — web pages, PDFs, FAQs — and uses the most relevant parts to write its reply.
When it's worth it
- You answer the same customer questions every day.
- Your information lives in long documents people struggle to search.
- You get enquiries outside working hours.

The best chatbot is the one that knows when to hand the conversation to a person.
